Brand new to the game - Quick questions - Guild Wars Forums

I'm very new to the game and this is my first online RPG ever. It's a nice change of pace for me having only played FPS/RTS games online.

Now, I just have a couple of questions.

1) I'm assuming your character's appearance changes as you gain new armor and accessories, etc?

2) There's no need to save and can just logout?

3) I was doing a quest by myself in the catacombs and as I was going up the steps my character just dropped dead. WTF!? Did I walk into a trap set up by another player or something?

4) Where can I get more info regarding the HUD?

5) Should I keep doing these quests by myself and gain more experience before joining a guild or does that not matter?

I understand the only way to customize your appearance is to use dyes to change the color of your armor and weapons.

Yes, just log out. Your instance of the world is saved on your computer, not on a central server.

That has happened to me several times. I think it is a spell cast by the spirits. I resurrect then go back and the spell seems to be gone.

4) Where can I get more info regarding the HUD?

This seems to be the best reference around, perhaps search the forums for the keywork HUD.

5) Should I keep doing these quests by myself and gain more experience before joining a guild or does that not matter?

I don't believe it matters on the guild. You want to be a level 7 or 8 before leaving pre-sear Ascalon, and you will need to team with one other player to get the resurrection quest from the monk just outside the South gate.

The catacombs have poison water. You were probably in that and didnt notice the icon debuf that shows up on the top left of your screen by your other buffs. Make sure to keep an eye out for that when entering water areas.

You are currently in the tutorial area. Do all the quests you can before moving on (by talking to the dood in ascalon city) You need a secondary profession in order to move on.

It wouldn't have been a trap set by another player. If you're exploring and PvEing, you will never be set up against another player. Since you said going UP the steps, I'm inclined to agree with Digitalblast, in that you were probably poisoned. There is a quest in there where as you're going DOWN the stairs, you have to watch out for fire traps.

It depends on the guild you want to join. For a lot of guilds, your level doesn't matter.
